The Museum of Aviation (Kāpiti) Incorporated (MoA) was formed in 1994 by a group of local aviation enthusiasts and provides a window on matters and material of aviation history and importance, with an emphasis on New Zealand and the Pacific, and with a particular emphasis on the Wellington Region including the history of the Kāpiti Coast Airport. It has an extensive library, walls adorned with captivating photos, scale models, medals and diorama for public viewing, all with an aviation theme.
Location
The Museum is located at 227 Kapiti Road in two buildings on Kāpiti Coast Airport alongside the old control tower on top of a small hill. The building occupied by the Museum was previously a meteorological office.
The area which includes the Museum and control tower are included in an Aviation Heritage zone on the Kāpiti District Council’s District Plan.
Members
The Museum is run by an enthusiastic group of members who have a variety of aviation interests, knowledge and experience. They meet at the Museum every Tuesday morning between 9.30am and 11.30am to socialise and discuss matters related to aviation history and general aviation activities in NZ, the Pacific, and the Kāpiti Coast.
Executive Committee
An executive committee comprises a President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer and Curator, together with other members, who administer the Museum’s overall operations. Officers of the executive committee are nominated by members in May each year when the annual general meeting is held.
Museum Opening Hours
The Museum is open to the public every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm, and while entry is free, donations are always welcome.
Membership
Membership of the Museum is available to everyone and costs $30/year.
The Museum is always seeking new members to assist with the task of preserving aviation heritage and no special skills or knowledge are required.
